Antique Five-Drawer Shaanxi Carved Coffer

This circa 1880 Shaanxi chest is an excellent representation of the elaborately carved coffers and tables crafted in the region. It would have been used as a secure storage box, featuring five drawers that can be locked with long iron handles. Each drawer displays intricate floral carvings, with a large rosette ornament in the center of the middle, full-width drawer.

Boasting a slightly tapered profile and recessed legs appearing under an extended top that likely served as a surface for honoring ancestors, this Shaanxi crafted coffer is an exquisite work of art. Crafted from elm wood and emblazoned with a beautiful worn black lacquer atop its impressive wide grain, its age renders it a timeless piece and a wonderful accent for any space; its five drawers adding to its functionality.
