Native American Ash Splint Basket, Circa 1900

Native American Winnebago/Ho-chunk hand carved & woven ash splint basket with loop handle. The rim of the basket is captured by two carved and bent ash splines with 1/4″ lashing capturing the vertical splines. The splines have been bent to create a flat bottom, and the loop handle has been notch carved and bent. The side lashings are 1/4″ to the bottom of the sides where a 1″ wide spline defines the base. From traces on the interior lashings we can see that the middle bands were dyed but are now faded.
